Kids and Grief:
Bereavement
Bereavement and Loss Training is a three-hour program for school personnel
interested in learning how to respond to grieving students. This training explores
the issues and identifies practical strategies for healing.
Why Do We Need Training on Bereavement and Loss?
- Loss is something that each of us will have to face at some
point in our life.
- If caregivers do not understand the grieving process and do
not intervene appropriately, more losses can occur. (i.e. risk
of suicide increases for individuals who have known someone who
has killed him/herself).
- Complicated grief can impact ones ability
to function and move through the grieving process.
- School personnel appropriately responding to a suicidal death
can decrease the likelihood of contagion and support the surviving
student body.
Who Should Attend?
Professionals and paraprofessionals who work with youth; maximum 40 participants.
This training is not intended to be a therapeutic workshop for individuals
who have experienced a loss. The content is introductory and does not presume
any expertise on the topic.
What to expect from Bereavement/Loss Training:
- Define the process of bereavement and loss
- Explore the impact of bereavement and loss issues on caregivers
and others
- Examine the unique issues related to bereavement and suicide
- Identify strategies when working with young people who are
in the grieving process.

Understanding Self-Harm:
Training On Self-Mutilation
This three-hour training is designed for school personnel interested in learning
to understand and respond to youth who harm themselves. The training helps
to differentiate self-mutilation from suicidal behavior and identify practical
strategies for intervention.
Why Do We Need Training on Self-Mutilation?
- The behavior is all too common, with an estimated one out of
200 teen girls regularly practicing self-mutilative behavior
- Caregivers need help sorting out self-mutilating behavior from
suicidal behavior.
- It is difficult for many of us to understand why anyone would
intentionally hurt him/herself. Many caregivers speak to being at
a loss with how to respond when a young person they know
is engaged in self-mutilating behavior and/or expressing suicidal
ideas.
Who Should Attend?
Professionals and paraprofessionals who work with youth; maximum 40 participants.
The content is introductory and does not presume any expertise on the topic.
This training is not intended to be a therapeutic workshop for individuals
who are engaged in self-mutilating behavior and/or having suicidal ideation.
What to expect from Self-Mutilation Training:
- Differences between self-mutilation and suicide
- Demographic and psychological characteristics of self-mutilators
- Reasons for self-mutilation
- Strategies for intervening with self-mutilating young people
- Obstacles that impact intervention
