Trevor R. Simpson Award Winners

YSPP is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2006-2007 Trevor R. Simpson Award.

To see past winners:

Central Kitsap Jr. High School was selected among schools with an enrollment of 1,000 students or more and Mountain View Middle School was selected as the small school winner. The two schools that will be recognized with honorable mention are Park Middle School and Prairie High School.

Please check back to see photos of the award presentations and more information about the winning schools. Here is just a brief description of the winners' prevention activities:

Central Kitsap Jr. High School:  Under the leadership of Sharon Goodman and David Keller, the CKJH prevention team gave 19 classroom presentations that reached over 1,000 students. They also organized a parent education night with the help of the PTSA, wrote a newspaper story for the school paper, hung posters up around the building, participated in the community suicide awareness walk, designed their own prevention t-shirts and distributed 1-800 SUICIDE cards to hundreds of students.

Mountain View Middle School: Under the leadership of Carla Bagby, the Mountain View Middle School prevention team gave 13 classroom presentations that reached all of their students during health and P.E. classes. We loved the originality of their strategy to select a theme and t-shirt color for each day of suicide prevention week; for example, Monday was "let your light shine" and they encouraged their peers to wear a yellow t-shirt. I guarantee you that it will encourage other schools and prevention teams to think this creatively next year!

Congratulations to both schools on their recognition and for the $500 award that will be used to further their prevention efforts next school year.
