National Suicide Prevention Week
Suicide Prevention Week is a national event to raise awareness about suicide and suicidal behaviors and to celebrate the efforts of all who are working to prevent suicide. Annual events are held in King, Kitsap, Pacific, Yakima and Spokane counties. In the past, a Walk for Life was held each May; Suicide Prevention Week is now in September.
In 2004 , National Suicide Prevention Week,
sponsored by the American
Association of Suicidology (AAS), took place September 5 through
September 11.
The theme was “Working Together to Save Lives.” Suicide
is a complex and multi-dimensional problem. Collaboration is the
key in this endeavor. With teamwork and cooperation, we can indeed
save lives.
From this year on, Suicide Prevention Week will take place in September
in order to synchronize with World
Suicide Prevention Day hosted by the International Association
for Suicide Prevention (IASP) in collaboration with the World Health
Organization (WHO).
World Suicide Prevention Day, falls on the second Sunday of September each year and represents a call for action and involvement by all governments
and organizations worldwide to contribute to the cause of suicide
awareness and prevention through activities, events, conferences
and campaigns in each country. This year's World Suicide Prevention Day is on September 14th 2008.
