About Suicide Prevention Week
Suicide Prevention Week is a national event to raise awareness about suicide and suicidal behaviors and to celebrate the efforts of all who are working to prevent suicide.
This year, National Suicide Prevention Week, sponsored by the American Association of Suicidology (AAS), will occur September 4th through September 10th. The theme is“Partnerships for Change: Advancing Suicide Prevention Services & Practice”.
This year’s theme celebrates the amazing diversity of people working together as partners to help our fellow human beings, and it challenges us all to continue our assiduous efforts to advance suicide prevention and practice as we increase our evidence-based foundations. Since suicide is such a complex and multi-dimensional problem, collaboration is the key in this endeavor. With collaborative partnership, compassion, solid research, hard work and cooperation, we can and will indeed save lives.
Beginning in 2004, Suicide Prevention Week takes place in September
in order to synchronize with World
Suicide Prevention Day hosted by the International Association
for Suicide Prevention (IASP) in collaboration with the World Health
Organization (WHO).
World Suicide Prevention Day, September 10, 2005,
represents a call for action and involvement by all governments
and organizations worldwide to contribute to the cause of suicide
awareness and prevention through activities, events, conferences
and campaigns in each country.
In western Washington, Puget Sound Suicide Awareness Day will take place on Saturday, September 4th, 2005. The 1st Annual Puget
Sound Suicide Awareness Day took place Sunday,
September 12, 2004, to coordinate with National and World events.
