Garth L. Manheim Tennis Tournament
Garth Manheim was an avid tennis player before his death by suicide
in 2001. He and his father, Jonathan, had often talked about hosting
a Junior/Senior tennis tournament. And so it was that a memorial
tennis tournament was born.
The 3rd annual Garth L. Manheim Memorial Tennis Tournament was
held this year on January 31 at the Bainbridge Island Racquet Club
(BIRC).
Jonathan and Leigh Manheim sponsored this event and over $3,800.00
- a record amount - was raised for the Youth Suicide Prevention
Program (YSPP) of Washington State. Prior recipients were NAMI Greater
Seattle and American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
This tournament was fun! It was an opportunity for adults to meet
and play with younger players. It was a chance for some of the braver
players to compete against the pros. It was also an event to raise
money for a good cause AND remember those who are no longer with
us due to the tragedy of untreated mental illness.
YSPP is so appreciative of the efforts of Jonathon and Leigh Manheim.
They, in turn, wish to extend their thanks to the Bainbridge Island
community for their continued support of YSPP and other suicide
prevention activities.
