YSPP Accomplishments (1995-present)
• Educational materials produced and distributed statewide,
with a resulting 10% increase in the publics awareness of
youth suicide prevention messages.
• Statewide, 42 middle and high schools implemented school-based
suicide
prevention campaigns, with an increased likelihood of youth
offering helpful advice to suicidal friends. 70 schools and community
organizations attended training to prepare for campaigns.
• Suicide awareness curriculum, informational brochure and
campaign materials are available in Spanish.
• 3,747 Gatekeepers persons in close, day-to-day

awareness presentations, with significant gains in knowledge about
suicide and their likelihood of seeking help for a youth at risk.
• Nationally, the Center for Disease Control promoted Washingtons
plan as a model for other states. The Office of the US Surgeon
General consulted YSPP staff in creating the National Strategy
for Suicide Prevention.
• YSPP has been showcased in local and national television,
including the documentaries Surviving High School, Taking
the Pulse, and A Cry for Help.
• The YSPP website is a vital community resource, with an
